Chaguaral
About the project
REDD+ — Avoided Deforestation
Orán Department, Salta
Verification in progress
Chaguaral is a REDD+ project in the semi-arid Dry Chaco region of Salta, one of the ecoregions under the greatest deforestation pressure in Argentina. The area had a valid legal deforestation permit: the strategic decision not to carry it out prevents the permanent loss of one of the last remaining continuous stretches of healthy native forest in the region.
The project goes beyond passive conservation: it implements active forestry to improve forest structure, increase its carbon sequestration rate, and gradually restore the ecosystem. It includes protective infrastructure such as 42 km of fencing, over 70 km of firebreaks, a fire detection tower, employee housing, and the creation of 8 permanent jobs dedicated to field activities.
The project also includes environmental education and awareness-raising for workers, communities, and local stakeholders.
