Biochar - SERVICES
Five dimensions,
none of which can be omitted
Unlike forestry or energy-efficiency credits, biochar is a physical asset that must be effectively applied and incorporated into the soil. The carbon credit is the final link in a five-dimensional chain: if one link fails, there is no certification.
-
01
Biomass
Quality, consistency, traceability, and feedstock valorization. The cost of biomass per ton of biochar is typically the dominant cost component.
-
02
Production (pyrolysis)
Process instrumentation: real-time recording of temperature, residence time, conversion, and emissions. A reactor without digital traceability cannot be certified.
-
03
Characterization of biochar
Laboratory parameters determining the conversion ratio to CDRs.
-
04
Soil application
Network of applicators and traceability scheme (batch, coordinates, dosage, date) verifiable by an external auditor. No credit without a recorded application.
-
05
Marketing of CDR
Monetization pathways, buyer profiles, and the retention and traceability requirements demanded by sophisticated buyers.
From waste to credit,
we support the entire cycle.
A biochar project is capital-intensive, and its viability depends on variables that must be verified before committing investment: sustained availability of suitable biomass, processing scale, technical suitability of the feedstock, and the existence of a traceable soil application pathway. Therefore, we propose a phased approach consisting of sequential, decision-oriented services.
Why GMF?

Certified B Corporation
We choose to act with positive impact, with climate solutions that leave a mark on the planet, not the atmosphere.

Multidisciplinary team
Forestry and agricultural engineers specializing in carbon markets, financial modeling, and commercial structuring, working bilingually in Spanish and English.

Certified experience
Puro.earth, Verra (VCS, VM0044, VM0047, VM0048), and Cercarbono, with over 20 years of experience in NBS projects in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.

Network of active buyers
Through The Carbon Sink, we gain access to sophisticated CDR buyers with ongoing due diligence processes.

Full-cycle view
We analyze the business from the biomass stage to the CDR buyer, including soil application—the link that most analyses overlook.

Real operators,
not just consultants
Co-developers of Latin America's first industrial biochar CDR hub (Virasoro, Corrientes).
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a biochar credit differ from a forestry credit?
Forestry-based approaches largely involve avoidance or capture that is reversible over decades. Biochar represents durable removal: the carbon remains stabilized for centuries, and the credit is issued within months, rather than following the long growth curve of a forest.
Will any biomass do?
No. It must qualify as actual waste—with no alternative market value—and meet technical parameters confirmed by accredited laboratory analysis. This is the first thing we verify during the Go/No-Go assessment.
What minimum scale does a project require?
It depends on the type of biomass, the technology, and the price of the CDR. The pre-feasibility study determines the threshold scenario separating value destruction from value creation.
Is it mandatory to apply biochar to the soil?
Yes. Biochar is a physical asset, and the credit is issued based on carbon that has actually been applied, with traceability regarding the batch, coordinates, dosage, and date—all verifiable by an external auditor.
How long does the initial evaluation take?
Three weeks in total: one week for the Go/No-Go decision and two for the pre-feasibility study, subject to the availability and quality of the information.
Does GMF also buy or market the excavated material?
Through The Carbon Sink, we support the commercialization process: market introduction and the negotiation of spot and early off-take agreements.
