Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, located in the NE of the province of Corrientes, is a pioneering forestry initiative in several aspects that began its activities in 2007 in a field of 3,405 hectares. The net plantation area is 2,430 ha., where 3 million specimens were planted, with 24% of the total area covered by reserves of native forests, pastures, riparian corridors (gallery forests that protect water courses) and natural springs of water.

It is the first and only forestry project in Argentina under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.

Developed in an area where the main activities are cattle ranching and traditional forestry (pure plantations of pines or eucalyptus), the initiative was proposed as a project for the afforestation of fields of natural pastures with the particularity of using native species of high value, mixed with fast-growing exotics. After the harvest of the exotic and part of the native species, a permanent forest of native species will have been developed.

OBJETIVE

The project’s main objective is to achieve verifiable carbon capture and to generate, in a sustainable way, high-value forest products.

PROJECT BENEFITS

The silvicultural management scheme implemented in Santo Domingo, in addition to its impact on climate change mitigation, generates a series of benefits and positive impacts in the three spheres of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.
