REDD + is a mitigation mechanism developed under the United Nations framework. It provides incentives for developing countries to protect their forest resources, improve their management, and use them in a sustainable way.
GMF is seeking to develop its first REDD+ Project in Argentina. In this sense, it has developed this initiative in the Yungas Rainforest region (NW of Argentina), in an area of 62,000 hectares, with a mitigation potential of 1,85M tons of CO2 through a sustainable forest management. Besides CO2 emissions avoidance and capture, the REDD+ Project will restore biodiversity and soil nutrients as well as enrich degraded forestry areas. These actions will positively impact in 200 families of forest-dependent communities.
Global Context: degradation and deforestation of the world’s Native Forests are cumulatively responsible for about 10% of net global carbon emissions. Tackling the destruction of these forests is core to any concerted effort to combat Climate Change.
Local Contexto: Argentina is one of the countries with the highest rates of deforestation in the world. Between 1990 and 2014, 7.3 million hectares of native forest were lost in the country, being the northern region the most affected. This is also the least developed region in the country with high rates of poverty, bad nutrition and illiteracy especially in rural populations areas.
